Buying advice

I am coming back yo cycling after a long lay off, I am looking for advice on a decent starter road bike for a budget of about £800-1000. I also note my office has a cycle to work scheme which may be an option to purchase. I have done quite a bit of online research but options available are all a bit overwhelming hence looking for some recommendations. Im 43 years old and will need the bike for non competition, general road cycling. Thanks in anticipation.
