Starter/winter bike

Hi,
I've recently sold my 8 year old GT Ruckus to give road cycling a try. I know the budget is useless but I'm getting married in November and there's no way I can spare any more than I've got for the old GT. The aim is to get something that I can get into road cycling with and use through winter then just use as a winter bike and get a decent one in spring. I know that most people will say there's nothing worth getting in that range but any ideas on what to look for in a used bike in terms of make, age features etc. It doesn't need to be a race winner, just something to get my legs strong with daily rides and long weekend rides.

Really? I didn't know what to make of them, they looked great but I assumed the idea would get shot down. Do you think thats a better/safer bet than the used market?

The Triban is well thought of in the cycling press and the warranty / service from Decathlon is usually very good. As a budget bike you won't beat it for value

Thanks guys, really useful to know. A forum member is selling a Specialized Allez for around my budget with the following specs

Allez Black Frame and Carbon Forks
Sora Triple 8 speed groupset (new cassette and kmc chain, plus jagwire cables).
Miche Performance brakes (new)
Deda White Bar Tape (new)
Ritchey Comp Stem (new) and ITM handlebars)
Alex Rims wheels (with new vittoria zaffiro tyres and tubes)
Selle italia X2 saddle

Seems like a pretty decent deal so I think I might well go for that as I've heard really good things about the Allez even if it is an older model!

The most important thing about buying a 2nd hand bike is how well the bike fits you, rather than the price. At least with the Triban 3, you can go to the shop and find the right size before buying it.
