Out of curiosity, does anyone know the current world record for cycling John o groats to lands end?

Off the top of my head I think it's about 43 hours for a man.

Current record for LEJoG is just over 44 hours on a standard bike by Gethin Butler, not sure if there's a separate record for going the other way. Going North is generally quicker due to the prevailing wind.
