I cringed when I first heard rumours of this. After Stallone's chronically bad film I'd hoped it wasn't true.

It actually looks not bad. The recent superhero films have, generally, been pretty good, so maybe hollywood's finally got the hang of them. Karl Urban as Dredd is inspired, but then I'm an unashamed Urban fanboy.

I'm really quite looking forward to it now.

Doesn't quite have the right look and feel to me. The Stallone one was too shiny and not really gritty enough, this one looks to have the grit but not enough of a sci-fi feel. Needs to be somewhere in between!

Agreed Urban is a good call for Dredd though.

Saw the trailer for this last week, and the premise looks ridiculously weak. Drug baron takes control of tower block and it's population and Dredd has to fight his way to the top? Sounds like an ZX Spectrum platform game.

Please tell me there is more to it!

I think the Stallone film was rubbish. It got me interested because it was about Dredd but bore little similarity to the stories I'd grown up with -removing helmet being the number one sin.

I was very happy when V for Vendetta kept true and the character kept his mask on throughout. Can you imagine Darth Vader taking his helmet off halfway through? It's part of the mysrptique that the character is human but doesn't have a face.

I'm looking forward to the new version, and hope they stay true to the comic original. I like Urban but I want Dredd to keep his helmet on throughout. The rest of the story will develop as I watch I'm sure.

And it doesn't have Rob Schneider!

I've read too many articles on the film by now, so I can't remember where I read it, but there was a hint that the film could become a trilogy. I'd expect (hope) them to introduce Dredd's world slowly over the 3 for those that don't know it. There was also speculation that the Dark Judges could be in the third.

I think it looks great, from what I understand it's true to the comics and Dredd keeps his helmet on.

oh dear the sooner this 3D rubbish goes away the better. 3D TVs haven't sold as well as the manufacturers have liked, I'll give it another year personally. HD all the way for me!

Saw it at the weekend. As escapist tosh goes, it's bloody good. Pretty much devoid of plot, but well done anyway - esp. some of the slow motion 3D.

Would take my brain out (to cool down) and watch again.

Saw it last week; it was ok. There was far too much slow motion stuff, done in 3D just because they needed to show off the 3D effects.

'The Raid' was a far better film.

I was a 2000AD reader for a number of years in the early/mid 80's. Many of the Judge Dredd stories didn't have the best of plots (I have been rereading some as now my son is going through the old collection whenever we go back to Ireland where it's kept). Given the emergence of video /computer games and arcades around the same time and being popular with the readership a story line like a computer game would probably have gone down quite well. Anyway how about a Rogue Trooper, ABC Warriors, Nemesis or Slaine film? Many of the other series would make great action movies.

I saw it in 2D and loved it and I'm not usually a fan of comic book films or mindless action.

I think the slo-mo stuff was quite good at illustrating the effects of the drug taking - some lovely trippy sequences, especially the one in the bath near the beginning with the rainbow effects in the droplets.

I'd liken this most to the Dirty Harry films - Dredd even sounds a bit like Clint sometimes.

Best action film I've seen for a while and I'd happily go and see a sequal - and I've never read a Dredd (or any other) comic in my life, so I'm no fanboi.
