Shifting issues

I'm having a few issues with my rear shifting on my MTB. What tends to happen is that it shifts fine one direction, but then going back down the gears it either doesn't shift or requires a bit of a nudge. I've repeatedly tried to set up the shifting with the mech limits and fine tuning with the barrel and replaced the cable just in case, but to no avail. Last night was the last straw - mid race and I couldn't shift quickly for toffee.

Shifters - Deore
Rear mech - Deore XT

Both about a year old and used a fair amount.

At a loss. Any clue?

Poor cable routing. Change the outers too.

Thanks, I'll get some outer cabling. How do I change the routing? Or have I misunderstood that bit?

You don't ness change, but make sure inners are routed through to the mech right and there are no sharp corners or stretches if you have a full susser.

SP40 is most excellent with XT. Don't forget the o-ring-tastic ferrules they are essential

New cables. Do inners and outers, no point in messing about. CRC (I think) are doing a full set XT, both ends for £15.
If it was working fine before ignore the routing - it won't have changed.

Thanks all. I always wondered what those (ferrules) were called!
