Does anyone know the legalities for entering the Olympics as independent athletes?

I'm pretty sure there must be guys on here that would be good enough not to come last.

You get to walk in the opening and closing ceremonies, and featured in the underdog of the day on the BBC! :P
All the above is just advice .. you can do whatever the f*ck you wana do!

  • My mate is the head of the Sealand Football Association. I could make enquiries about setting up a cycling team?

I'd like to enter the GB women's cycling team in Rio. And some other countries too, come to think of it.

The way IOC regulations work you may have to enter them through the back door route, would that still be OK?

Basically you have to enter through your national Olympic association(Colin Moynihan's the head of the GB&I association). If you are a national of a country that doesn't have an OA, or the OA is in dispute with the International association, you can enter under the banner of the IOC (ie represent the committee and not the full agency).

What you could do, of course, is qualify as a national of a country that falls into one of the above criteria and apply to the IOC on that basis.

But, as naturalisation usually takes more than 4 years Rio's probably out of the question. Also, it would probably mean emigrating to somewhere unsavoury such as the Dutch Antillies or, if Alex Salmond has hsi way, Scotland.

No need to buy an island.. just some scummy town that the Gov doesn't want to deal with.

    United State of Peterborough?

Obviously this island would be large enough to cope with all the women and small enough that commuting won't be an issue. Sounds like a fine place to be.

arrrr you mentioned women and commuting in the same sentence - bad boy.

Couldnt we fly under the flag of Alsager - it sounds foreign.

OR,thinking laterally,we could take out nationalisation of a non-cycling country like,er,Nepal or Patagonia.Provided we get through the qualifiers,we`re in.Flying down to Rio.Like it.Seems to work in reverse, looking at Team GBs profiles. We can train at Derbys new velodrome, so I can commute.
Whats the solution? Just pedal faster you baby.

Yeh, this happens in other sports, where you'll see English or Americans representing Vanuatu or Kiribati.

  • The biggest incentive I'd have thought is you get 2 weeks living around very fit, healthy young things who, after their event, have nothing to do.

Well, it works for me. Where do I sign?
