How many Lumens do I need for my rear lights for winter commute, I am going to buy an exposure flare at 75lumens and a Cateye TL-LD1100 10, I am unsure of the lumens for this light, I also have two fiber flares, will this be enough for the rear?

  • It depends what you're trying to do. If you want to prevent large oil tankers crashing into the back of you then go the mega lumens way.

For road use I'd just use any of the flashing rear lights you can pick up. My 7 year old 5 LED Cateye seems to alert car/bus/motorbike drivers adequately.

While many lights may be better, you seem to be caught in the 'want' part of the want vs need argument. You don't need all those lights, you just want them... Still, buy those British 'Exposure' ones and help the British economy! :D

Just buy a single Philips Luxeon Red from DX for £7, get a couple of 18650's and a charger, everything for less than £20 delivered.

It looks like you have a small sun attached to the back of your bike, attach it with a mash up of mounts or gaffer tape it to your rucksack.

There is no cheaper or brighter rear red light then this.

Moon shield, bright enough to paint a 1.5m red circle on the road behind you which stops the cars coming too close. Easy mounting, durable and USB re-chargable so you can charge it at work easily.

Simply the best made, most elegant lighting solution for bikes today.

The LD1100 is the back up light (screwed onto my rack) for my Hope District 3. It is a perfectly good light, waterproof, bright with multiple settings and does get you noticed

However - you should always have two different lights on the rear of the bike (and front!). Not just for the increase in visibility but for the backup in case of failure aspect.

My Hope rear light makes me look like a mobile brothel and the pool of light is so great it actually reflects off the FRONT mudguards. It's completely OTT but I never fail to get noticed when cycling at night (unlit country lanes)

Don't want it too bright, otherwise be like those plonkers with fog light on during night time. I use a couple of .5W smart led, and very bright.
    Say... That's a nice bike..

I use a couple of simple LEDs that cost about a quid each. They are very sharp, and work fine.

    These little things are great:

  • I have one of these Smart lights on my lo-Pro for TT's. you can see them over a mile away in daylight on a DC. They get brighter the closer you get...... yes, I catch people ( if they get a flat!) the battery lasted for a 12hr on flashing.
