alternatives to Vitus Vee?

Hi all. my 12 yr old son has a nice Stumpjumper, built up from a 2006 frame and decent components. The frame is soon to be replaced by a "new old stock" Rockhopper frame in a bigger size. This will obviously be great on the trails but he's also spreading his wings riding round town with his mates, leaving the Stumpy (hopefully) locked up god knows where! He's also just about to start going to local leisure centre for gym and swimming and it's notorious for bikes going missing...

So, I'm beginning to think about getting him a town hack, MTB style, rigid forks, possibly even single speed, and something that doesn't cry out "i'm expensive, steal me". the Vitus Vee seems to fit the bill, but are there any others I should look at?
Titus Silk Road Ti rigid 29er - Scott Solace 10 disc - Kinesis Crosslight Pro6 disc - Scott CR1 SL - Pinnacle Arkose X 650b - Pinnacle Arkose singlespeed - Specialized Singlecross...& an Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray 4 string...

  • Would second hand be a better bet for avoiding thievery. If it's just for hacking around town then grab something off ebay. If you want to keep it low-maintenance then you could convert it to single-speed. I've got a conversion kit which I'm planning to sell, PM me if you're interested.

The Vee-1 is a fantastic bike, it's just fun full stop, CRC have last years model discounted as well, spend the balance on a good lock!

There seem to be very few 26inch wheeled alternatives I think.

+1 - I have the 29-er Vee1 - its a hoot. Went down to Esher to watch the Olympic TT on it last week and there were many lycra-clad roadies looking at it and scratching their heads ..............
