Steerer is too short!

Hi guys,

I bought a fork off a mate (Rockshox Revelation 426 120mm) and the steerer is too short, it is only just long enough to go past the first bolt in the stem, so just over half the stem is not on the steerer. Are there any ways of extending a steerer that isn't a bodge? I am trying to source a replacement, uncut upper fork unit but I don't have a ride until this is sorted so I'm keen to get it ready!!

That's with no spacers under the stem?

that depends on the year. some had zero stack headsets.

OP more info or pics needed.

  • possibly as above, a shorter stack headset and possible a shorter height stem, but most of then now are around the same size, you may be able to free up 10mm or so with a combo of both,

The stock zero stack was an FSA tall stack I believe. So even then a shorter stack would mainly fix the issue. But yes, pics pls.

Steerer extenders are NOT a good idea on an MTB even if you have good dental insurnace, besides the quill style attachment only really works in steel steerers as they do not fit inside most alloy steerers with their bigger wall thickness.

No spacers on there, will take some pictures of the headset set up.

Can't fit an extension because there isn't enough steerer coming out the headset to secure the extension onto!

I reckon you're right, I linked to some products above but think they're only suited to undemanding use. Definitely no good for 'proper' MTBing.

A steering tube can be extended if you can find a good engineer / machinist.

but dear old Grip is a rarity.

and like him you need to know what you are doing.

steel steerers are easy. Alloy ones not so.

New frame might also be an option.

I know it doesn't help here, but check what steerer length is needed before buying second hand forks.

Get the same uppers in some used forks, swap and sell the short steerer on.......or just sell these forks and buy the 'right' ones!

There are some RS uppers on ebay right now from memory that may or may not be compatable!

at present, I have a man in the know trying to locate some uppers for me from within the trade, but it's not looking good!

The bike is being built on a budget so I think it might be a case of selling these forks and buying some to replace them, the forks are probably over spec for the quality of my riding!

Having a slight problem putting pictures up as I'm on my work laptop, I'll post links to pictures of the same frame and head set to give an idea of how it's all put together, existing steerer length is about 180mm so not exactly short!

I've been doing some digging (well, ebaying), and have found this:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-RST-11-8- ... 804wt_1398

Can the steerer tube be pressed out and replaced on revelations? Would be easier than having to change the whole CSU!

and that is not for a RS fork.

most modern forks do not allow for steerers to be pressed in and out it is now a one shot operation unlike the designs of old.
