Good Samaritan falls flat on his face

Yeah and I was the Good Samaritan.

A mile into the ride home last night, I saw a guy waiting at bus stop with a flat back tyre.

"A rescue!" I think. I had a spare tube and was quite happy to give him it (cyclist in need and all that), so I turn 'round and ask if he needs a hand as I had a spare tube

He looked very sheepish and quietly said "I do but it's a 650c wheel" (I may have misheard him as I swear he said 600, but presumed he did say 650)

Who the hell uses a 650c wheel????

It turns out he'd bought the bike of a mate a couple of weeks ago and this was his first ride out. He was waiting for the bus hoping they'd let him on to get him near enough home so he could walk the rest of the way.

So, I offered sympathy and good luck. Called him a weirdo  and left (the bus was just in sight)

(happier end to the story - when the bus came past I could see him and the bike on it)

  • You need to get into the habit of carrying a spare tube AND a couple of patches.

With smaller wheels this could have been a beautiful lady stranded - and then you'd have been kicking yourself for letting her down.

Surely as a get-you-home (or get-a-date) temporary fix a 700c tube could fit a smaller wheel?

Anyhoo. Croggy = default term where I come from and in common use from about the age of 8 or so when we all started biking to school & to the rec for footballing purposes. The lack of knowledge of linguistic basics on here is worrying.

We used both 'round my place but croggy was the main term.

I think for the future I will now be carrying some patches with me and hope that the cape makes me look like a super hero....

Backie is a ridiculous word though. Croggy isn't. Not at all. :)

Backie around here. And I would have hope to have been offered one if it was me you found stranded with a hole in my 650c tube

Ofc it would need to have been the 5th hole in my 650c tube as knowing I have stupidly small wheels I carry a spare tube and patches.

He should have had spare tubes for 20" wheels, 24", 26" 650C , 750C and 27" wheels in a variety of widths.

Additionally, a bike stand, a wheel truing jig and a workshop of tools, just in case.

Don't all reasonable cyclists carry this?
