Hybrid/Commuting bike on a budget

Hello,

I'm fairly clueless when it comes to bikes and I know that I am severely limiting my choices but don't want to spend more than about £250 (or less if I can get away with it)

My comumute with be approx 3 miles each way on roads and pavements (alongside busy A road) with some uphill sections.

I'm looking at:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165534

or

http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/product ... brid-bikes

If I go with the second option, I will probably wait until towards the end of the year when prices start dropping.

Or would I be better off going for a used bike for around £150 on ebay?

I would be really grateful for any other suggestions or pointers.

Thanks

HH

Carerra Subway and Revolution Courier are both solid, dependable bikes that are ideal for short-med commutes.
The subway has a wider gear range and better over rough roads, the courier has simpler transmission system, easier to keep clean and faster wheels. Over 3 miles they will be pretty much the same speed. The subway has a higher grade fork, which may make the bike lighter.
Both are better than a used bike.
Budget for accessories: rack, mudguards (full-length bolt-on), lights, lock, helmet. Strongly consider a tyre upgrade from the crappy ones supplied to a premium, protected commuter tyre such as Schwalbe Marathon Plus.

I think the Carerra is edging it for me at the moment.

    What about this:

I expect it may be slightly slower than the other two, though I don't think that will be much of an issue for me.

I would be grateful for any other advice or alternative suggestions.

    Thanks MichaelW!
