Tyres, any reason why not these?

Hi folks,

I know absolutely nothing about road tyres, so I have had a good search through the forum, but with all the different suggestions, thought I would try a different approach here for tyre advice...

I ride a Spec Allez, pretty old now, just to and from work, shops or town. So usual max distance is a 22mile round trip. Might do some longer rides some time in the future, but not too worried about that now. I haven't ridden anything particularly light or quick, so comparisons won't bother me. Current tyres are Gators.

So I just want something simple, reliable, safe in the wet, not too sluggish and not too prone to punctures. I bought the bike for £60 so don't want to spend a huge amount, and I am probably 5kgs overweight, so a few grams here or there shouldn't be a worry.

I have found some Vittoria Zaffiro 2 Wired Tyre for a ridiculously cheap price of £7.49.

Is there anything seriously wrong with them? Or will they be fine for what I need? I know over the coming years I will probably develop particular like or dislikes, but for now I just need some new tyres that do the job.

Any thoughts?

  • Vittoria are a good quality brand, despite the price you won't go wrong with the Zaffiro given the circumstances you describe. I'm currently running 25mm Zaffiro slicks that came with my bike, same as the ones you're looking at except for the tread pattern. Used for mostly fair weather road riding and sportives, no problems with them at all. I have tried Gatorskins and didn't like them, I would go for Vittoria every time.

+1 for Vittorias, no experience with the Zaffiro's. But i'm currently running on a pair of Rubino pros. And compared to the Specialized Mondos that came with the bike (a 2010 Allez) They are far better.
I'd say for what you want them for, and at that price, they've got to be worth a try!
