Hi all

Just purchased an Edge 800 unit today, after many months of deliberation.....

Haven't been out for a ride yet, but I can't seem to get the set up to change the distance from ft to miles!...

Am I missing something??.....been through all the instructions and seem to have done everything correctly..

Thanks
Paul

RIght guys losing the will to live here.......
Why does the unit when I put in an address only show the distance as being half what it actually is.....is this something in the set up...??? or is it a fault with the unit........
I am using this with the Discovery map installed, and I have set it up for use as "car" as I figured with a road bike I dont want it directing me of up some of road path.....at least with car it will stick to roads....
this distance thing is really frustrating me....
    any help??

It sounds like you are trying to use it like you would a car sat nav? I dont think that is what the 800 excels at tbh. I think all manner of things could be happening to give strange data.

Depending on what you are trying to achieve it may be better to create courses on your chosen software / website (Garmin Connect might be the easiest to start with) then export them to the to the device. Have to admit i've never used it as a pure navigation device, only courses and prompts for upcoming junctions in case I get lost.

    +1

Here's a guide to creating courses on the Garmin 800, this is what I do, and Bike Route Toaster is free to use.

Thanks Guys, I have loaded some courses created on the Garmin connect website and its pulled them across with the correct mileage. I was just trying to see if it was set up okay by checking the route on a distance that I knew. But it still isnt correct, so I am not sure why. I guess the best thing to do will be to just to try it.....

I'm thinking of buying one at the minute. Am I right in thinking that if you dont buy the official Garmin maps and go with the open source maps, that you cant use it for turn by turn directions?

The whole thing is very confusing, all the different packages etc.

Dont know whether to go for the 500 with cadence and HRM or the bog standard 800

I now use my 800 with OS Maps and the old courses and new ones all have turn by turn guidance on them, you can turn them on in the course settings on each course.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

After looking at it for some time, my conclusion was that if you want guidance and the ability to get home if your lost then you need the 800, if all your after is training data from heart monitors and cadence with no real guidance as such then the 500 would be the one to go for.

When you go for a ride does it calculate your distance from A to B? When you upload the data to Garmin Connect what does that look like? If you are still trying to use it like a car Sat Nav then tbh i'd stop worrying about that part of it and start using it like a cycle training tool!
