For all this olympic success our nation is now enjoying.
Afterall, the tories blame them for all the sh1t we're in, so credit where it's due, they obviously lay the foundations for the sporting success. I don't suppose for one minute the boys in blue will be splashing the cash on sporting facilities, they're an extravagance.

Didn't the Major govt introduce the lottery with the specific requirement for funding to go to good causes and sporting benefits?
1 nil.0 -
So what, I'm not having the tories in any way shape or form taking credit for our olympic showing. They'll cut, cut, cut and sport will not be spared. But, like politicians of all colours they're there bathing in reflected glory come medal time.Tail end Charlie

Michael Gove's first act as Education Minister was to cut funding for sports in schools. Should have cut spending on shit, pointless subjects instead.0

It's lottery funding, the sporting success is due to poor desperate types buying scratchcards. Greatest olympics for years and if all you can think about is your ingrained political bias then that is really sad imo.0

Its all down to Boris and Sebastian,
sounds like an Episode of Brideshead revisited, All Jeremy Irons and Chariots of Fire
Come on Frank Play up and Play the game, your just being a miserable beggar cause you cant get off your Turbo.
We ve got to get some GOLD back some how since Gordon gave it all away on the cheap.
Think you ll find Lea valley and Stratford are Labour controlled and always will be, so benefiting for years to come.0 -

1 nil.
He did, but it was for all the British 'games' rather than athletics etc.
So cricket, rugby, football, etc.
It changed after Atlanta when Britain only got 1 gold.0 -

You didn't notice at the end of Frank's post, did you?
I've got a feeling Frank's warming himself up for his day out to Whitby today0 -

Apparently acc to the good old left-leaning BBC half of all medals are from athletes who went to schools that daddy paid for (and went to probably). Once you spot a pattern it make sense to take steps to make that pattern happen more, so cut the wasted funding going to state schools and send it all to proper schools, where it'll be better spent resulting in 100% of all medals in Rio coming from privately educated rah-rahs.
Back of the net. 2-0. Eat my goal.0 -

He's back on the bike and going like a train, puffing like Stephenson's Rocket We went out to Newark on Friday and he rode better than he has in a long time.0 -
No, no, no, no, no.
It's *still* Thatcher's fault.0 -
You cannot blame this or the previous administration.
Lets face it, there has been a slow dwindling of emphasis for years regarding the importance of a good Physical Education. My mother was trained in the fiftes as a primary teacher and the PE syllabus included extensive gym work and a huge array of sports. This was of course on the back of the foundation for good health in the UK and the formation of the NHS, free milk and preventative medicine. What the Rah Rah's and Camorons do not appreciate or care about is that we the tax payer pay for the burgeoning health bill because of a lack of preventative medicine and good diets.
They don't care becuase they often don't use the NHS nor the state school system. They only care about the rising cost hence the continuous propensity of Tory governments to want to privatise huge sectors of it.
One fifth of the population is obese and I bet you 2 fifths of them can't cook. We spend £12M per day on diabetes problems alone, never mind problems caused by smoking, obesity, poor diets, drugs & alcohol and atrociously poor lifestyles and living conditions.
Despite this, given the injection of cash, facitilites and opportunity we can acheive a hell of a lot. The Velodrome in Manchester was only completed in the late 90's and incredibly, in less than half a generation (Beijing 2008), we had phenominal success in cycling and our most successful games in the modern era.
It is long overdue that we no longer vote for administrations that are by the elite and for the elite. With the power of the Red Tops gone, is'nt it time we got rid of the current set of sycophantic politicians?. I am glad Scotland is going independant even though I am not Scottish. I feel for the rest of the UK.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -

In general, Labour are thick, jealous hypocrites.
Give them power and they love it. And all the cheap gold bling they get to wear.
Then they set about trying to make the world more fair while gorging themsleves on celebrity and all the trappings. Thankfully, natural selection means it never lasts long.
FFS lads, if you want to troll, do it properly!0 -

I'll bet that most of the gold medal winners in proper sports didn't go to private school0 -

Thanks for that. I was, of course, just trolling with the "proper" sports, but obviously sports requiring serious financial outlay are more dominated by private school types (horse and boats).0 -

You to have overlooked the fact that lefties hate the competitive element of competitive sport. No one is allowed to win in Leftie Land, because it hurts the feelings of the losers.
Any suggestion that this attitude may stem from the fact that lefties were fat little turds who were utter gimps at school sports, used to cry themselves to sleep because they hated being picked last, hated not being passed to, couldn't catch, couldn't throw, couldn't kick, couldn't ride a bike, had "asthma" (course you did dear. Asthma isn't at all the same as being out of breath a lot), and hated being labelled losers would be wholly misplaced. Yes sirree.
So, if you think a strong work ethic and a desire to reward success come from The Wealth Redistributors, please let us know what you're smoking.0 -

I'd love to see any of the Tory cabinet attempting to run. 4x100m relay with David Cameron, Michael Gove, Eric Pickles and William Hague, that would be classic.
Anyway, on to more serious matters, here is how our wonderful Tory government is planning to boost sporting success in the future:
