Who's the next star?

So Bradley Wiggins has fully completed his crossover from track superstar to general superstar, Chris Froome looks capable of developing into a Grand Tour winner, and Cav we know all about.

Who's the next British road star? Has Geraint Thomas got the ability to do a Wiggins? Clearly GB and SKY have the setup in place to take people to the infamous "next level", will there now be a long term impact from British riders on the road?

G could become a good classics rider. I did think Kennaugh would be the next star but he hasn't seemed to progress much yet probably down to putting the road on hold a bit this year for the Olympics. JTL could possibly become a contender but he's no youngster. Loads of youngsters coming through for the future and doing well in junior classics but it's always hard to tell how they will do in stage races. There's a good balance of riders coming through though with Swift and Blythe for sprints, Dowsett as a TTer in addition to the above.

Thomas has got a monument in him if he works on it I reckon.

If anyone says Germain Burton they are going to get a slap.

Kennaugh has what it takes to be a GT rider of distinction, as he can climb and time trial. I think he'd have to forego his track ambitions though (although a Gold later today may be enough). I think Thomas will have to specialise, as at the moment he looks like he could be either a Classics rider or a GT rider (assuming he's prepared to do the work on his climbing). It's difficult to do both these days.

Haha, I was just googling Germain Burton to see what he's been up since that thread about him a year or two back. I don't want a slap, though, so I'll say no more.

He has spoken about these previously and admitted to needing to focus, and at 26 he seems the prime age to knuckle down and specialise.

He's a very good rider, but I doubt he's quite as good as some would have you believe and, if his performances against his peers are anything to go by, he's not good enough domestically to ever make it internationally.

Isn't he 17? Bit young to write-off or call a star. He's got a good hill climb in him for a kid.

I do not doubt for one minute that he's a very capable and talented rider but I agree with you, it's too soon to say. Which was my original point.

You can add Sam Harrison to them and slightly older but looking good at Endura is Erick Rowsell. For potential future talent the Tour of Wales results are quite a useful guide http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junior_Tour_of_Wales

For the record, the year I rode it I came last - as I say it's a great guide to potential

Haha yeah I'd forgotten about Harrison, I know very little about Rowsell though. Not sure I've ever seen him race

I fought very hard to win that and there wasn't even a prize, made a spectacular bid for it in the road stages having finished top 30 in the hill climb prologue!

Roswell has fast legs. Was duking with E/cat1 riders at hog hill and soloing several laps of the e12 crystal palace crits.

J Burton has a good palmare for his age and can tear up the hills. He is also a Londoner and doesn't come from a privileged background. I'm backing him for sure.

There are a couple of handy riders at Hackney Cycle Club? but I don't know too much about them (apart from them overtaking me towards the end of the dunwich dynamo when they were 13/14, and I wasn't going easy)

2013. The year of Pete Kennaugh.

I doubt any of the new crop will reach the heights of Cavendish or Wiggins, but Thomas, Stannard, Swift, Kennaugh, Rowe, Fenn and Blythe all have potential to be good one day riders. And Dowsett a TT specialist.
I also think Thomas may turn out to be the GT rider rather than the long expected Kennaugh.

And let's not forget Froome is just 27.

How about extending the thread to international riders? Joseph Dombrowski?

Andrew Talansky, Rohan Dennis, Elia Viviani, Nairo Quintana

(Phinney, Pinot & van Garderen are a bit obvious and Sagan is already there)

Also Fabio Aru of the real youngsters.

Wilco Kelderman at Rabo has had a storming first year as pro. I really like Romain Bardet at Ag2r too.
