Fork(ing) Quandry

I now want to upgrade my Domain RC Single Crowns.
I haven't had them long, but I'm now after something with a bit more control. They were a stop-gap between the terrible Fox's and what I really want.
1st option is the Marzocchi 66 RC3 Evo Ti.
I'm pretty much sold on these but have a question relating to the spring.
Is the Ti spring interchangeable like on normal coil forks? I've read the manual and you set the fork for rider weight via the air preload, but surely 1 coil can't suit all?
2nd option is the RS Totem RC2 DH - Coil.
But its the same weight as the Domain and doesn't get as good reviews as the 66.
I could get some Fox 36 FLOAT 180 FIT RC2, But I don't want Fox.
Any help?!

Totems are great and mega stiff but for me it would have to be the Marzocchi's, they have really improved the last couple years.
Coil Lyriks are also very nice, I had the RC2DH and it rides like a mini boxxerTransition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
Yeah I want the 'zocchis but not sure about the spring... CRC are taking forever to reply0

How about trying to get the damper tuned on the Domain? It has an internal (fixed) high speed shim stack that can be tuned.0
-
An option I guess... but with external adjustments I could play around with the settings as I needed. I guess an email to TF is in order.
TBH I am happy with the Domain, its way way way way way waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better that the Fox Van R that it replaced.
But i'm getting twatted around on the high speed chattery stuff! I might try the lighter spring, but I reckon I'll ruin the sag.0 -
Are you bottoming regularly?0
-
Never... they're bottomless
used 99% of the travel a few times, but not bottoming as such.0 -
Maybe the the high speed damping is set a little too high.0
-
Thats pre-set in the motion control though isn't it? Which I guess is what you mean could be tuned. Hmm will see what TF say then!0
-
Yep!
Are you having my RL frame then?! ;-)0 -

Air preload just adds to the spring. It's common across the RC3 forks I think, my 66's have it and they're an air fork.0 -
I'm 16 stone & managed to set up an 888 RC3 Ti (different fork but same system) to work for my bulk. Nicest fork I have ridden, even plusher than my BoXXer R2D2.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

Found out the stock spring can be changed.. comes as medium in the fork, I'll need stiffer which would be extra so they're out of the question now. Bit gutted like, serves me right for being a big northern monkey I guess.
Comparable Fox's are just out of my budget.. I'd rather the Domains anyway! The open bath on the Van R has completely put me off them!
unless I can get a steal on some totems, I think the Domains will stay put!0 -
Coil Totems aren't a bad price but I would stick with the Domains and get TF to tune them.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

On an unrelated note, well semi-unrelated, does anyone know if its possible to get replacement uppers for Domains - mine have a small 2-3mm dent in them just above the seals which appears to be the perfect way of sucking crap into the internals and pissing oil out over the seals.
They are 302's if that makes any diff.
I dont think they were designed like that which means I have done it to them which I am suprised by as I only dropped it once since I bought it and noticed the dent before I dropped it..... :oops:Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0 -
You can actually get a new fork for less than the cost of a set of uppers. If you shop around there are some great deals on Domains.
I actually sold my 318 Domains on ebay lays night for more than I have seen new ones on CRC!Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
I have seen some sensibly priced domains on crc but my wallet is light enough as it is without any additional space being made in it!
I'll run the notchy denty ones for the rest of summer - bike parks only open another month and a half so I will be back to the xc soon enough!Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0 -

was it the fox open bath thing, or open bath in general, that you didn't like? just wondered, as the rc3 66s are open bath, I think (but I might well be wrong)
I'm aware that's all a bit academic if you're set on getting the domains noodled around with...0 -
Nah just the Fox's... Theirs is utter crap. Just blows through travel too easily with no feedback!
Think I had my Fox's about a month before getting rid, I made money selling them and buying the domains... The domains are much much better.0
