Advice for bike around £1000

Hey guys,
Been biking for a few years now and lately even more so, now looking to upgrade. My current bike is a 2008 GT Avalanche 1.0, looking to spend around a £1000. I ride cannock chase, peak district and the odd trip to the lake district or wales.
Just looking for some friendly advice to point me in the right direction really, still not sure if i should go with a decent hartail in that price bracket or a lower end full suspension such as a trance x4. Also if i were to go for a hardtail how much travel would be ideal given where I ride?

There are good examples of both hardtail and full suspension for this price, though the former tend to be lighter and better specced. It sounds to me that you want a classic trail bike ie 100-130mm of travel, and built for just the places you describe.
