To be fair, Wiggo is pretty unlikely to be hit by a car on his victory lap on a closed road, but I really wish he hadn't spouted off about helmet laws.
Whenever I hear a compulsion argument for anything relating to self preservation I'm reminded of an interview of a Scandinavian lady for a programme about a potential "fat tax" to curb obesity. Sweden (I think) were considering such legislation. The conversation basically went:
Interviewer: Do you think an increased tax on fatty foods is a good idea?
Lady: Yes, because I buy too much chocolate and it makes me fat.
Interviewer: Couldn't you just buy less chocolate anyway, regardless of tax?
Lady: *blank stare*
Legislation to protect people is good. Legislation to protect people from themselves is often counterproductive IMHO.0 -
