Apparently a guy was involved in a collision with a bus carrying media personnel, near to the velodrome. Very sad and, after the elation of Wiggin's Gold medal earlier today, very humbling. Respects and condolences to all family - a very unhappy way to end the day.

RIP fella. There's a very harrowing eyewitness account on the LFGSS forum.

Saw that - very scary. Also, seen this morning that apparently a man has been charged for causing death by dangerous driving. This is a really bad news story all round.

Can't believe that Wiggins has immediately weighed in with his views on compulosry helmet wearing in response to this. What an idiot. I respect what he's done and he's entitled to his views but to make it about helmet wearing so soon when we don't even know what happened (although early accounts don't suggest a head injury but the wheel going over the body) seems incredibly provocative and fuel for the anti-cycling media.

Exactly, why make it about helmets and take he heat away from the motorist, we should be talking about increasing awareness when riding/driving not about helmets

Wiggins may not have been told the full facts - do you actually know what he was told about the accident? Obviously, expressing an opinion without knowing the full facts could open you to the accusation of being an idiot (as could someone making a post on a forum without knowing the full facts  ) but Wiggins did have the excuse of not being quite sober.

Wiggins has now clarified his comments - possibly in the light of day and sobriety, possibly after some PR advice, possibly due to misreporting.

There is a thread on this in the 'chat' section, with a video of the press conference.

Saw that and it contains all the appropriate responses. I just didn't think a 'chat' forum was the right place considering the issues but appreciate the integrity of the discussion - thanks
