Does being a member of this forum cost you money?

edited October 2012 in Road buying advice
Been thinking a lot latley about this topic. I love bikes and have owned a few especailly the last 5 years or so. The purchases have been slightly impulsive and based on website deals that were to good to miss, comments from forum members and i know that drooling over other peoples bikes and components on here has caused me to go out and spend a lot of hard earned cash. Dont get me wrong i think this is a great place for sharing and getting advice but sometimes i feel that this detracts me from what its all about - riding your bike.

This really hit home on saturday when i went to box hill. When the guys went through me about hundreds of other cyclists followed them down the road. It felt great. I was surrounded by £5k Treks, Cervelos, Wyndy Milars  etc and for the first time in years could not care less. My VN Mistral stood out, felt comfortable, i could keep up with the others and for once it felt so right just to be riding the bike and enjoying the experience.

From now on I intend just to enjoy what i have got and enjoy riding and will try not to worry about my wheels, tyres, frame material, bar width.....well not until bits wear out.

Dont worry - this feeling will only last a short while and you'll be back to normal tomorrow.

So anyway - have you seen any nice parts on the olympic competitors bikes that you "need"?? :D

I think in the great scheme of things it has saved me money.

I took a lot of advice on the forum before I bought my first proper road bike, and as a consequence it was perfect for my needs and I have remained happy with it for the 5 years I've owned it.

Fellow forumites have also flagged up many online bargains; Planet X jerseys for a tenner, Bolle specs from Ebay for 7 quid, freebie Zipvit water bottles full of goodies etc...
  • Yes it does.

Its also full of pricks who live the lie and think they are all pro racers :D
  • It costs me a fortune in my dreams, unfortunately I then wake up and speak to the little cherubs that make my money magically disapear.....
  • Being a novice to this, just getting into the sport costs a load! Been making do on my MTB with road tyres and spent 300 quid in clothing, kit, pedals, tyres etc etc in 2 months! The road bike will be next! Forums like this are invaluable and have helped me make good decisions. I dont mind spending money on kit if I actually use it and I most certainly am!

Starting out with an Spesh Allez 2013 Sport which I am sure will last me many years until I have the money and experience to appreciate the better components/frames etc.
  • cycling should be a cost effective hobby....should be, bloody well isn't though!

Just being a road cyclist costs you thousands, you always want a better bike, better clothes and better shoes, you'll fight it for so long but it'll get you.

I have not come across any "prick racers wannabes"? I have however bought lots of new stuff based on recomendations but I enjoy what I buy and use. In short yes but its money I would be spending anyway just with help on here I can spend it on more well informed choices.
