Hi guys,
First time buyer of a mountain bike with about £600 to spend. Have hopefully narrowed it down to a few decent bikes but I just wondered which one out of these you guys though would be the best for me.
Voodoo Bokor 29er at £679
Dawes XC27D at £549
Merida MATTS 70D at £499 or
Carrera Kraken at £449.
Many thanks for any advice you can give me.

The XTC is well worth the extra cash over the Talon even if just for the fork. The Dart fork on the Talon is a bit rubbish, the Recon Gold on the XTC is massively better.
Talon does ride nicely though (other than the fork) I bought one for the wife & since fitting a good fork I use it myself a quite lot.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
I'd avoid the Talon, purely on the basis of the fork.2011 Carrera Fury

The usual suspect - Decathlon Rockrider 8.1 at £500, Boardman Comp at £650.0

Just to point out I really need something with a 22 inch frame. Thanks for all the advice so far though.0
-
You may not do though - I have 18 inch frames that are longer than 20.5 inch frames! It depends on how they are measured, plus other factors like reach, bottom bracket height and so on. Best thing to do is go and sit on the models and try the sizes they offer.0

What do people make of the Trek 4300 2012 model?0

Putting it bluntly........ poor fork, poor gears, typical budget frame, poor brakes...........Orange 5 Pro 650b 2014

Perhaps I should put it this way then, what are the best make of bikes for mtb in general? If that is at all answerable.
Thanks.0 -
It's not.I don't do smileys.

Yeah I like the Fury and the Voodoo Hoodoo so I'm hoping 20 inch frames might fit me.0

I really do think there should be a what bike? part of the forum with xc bikes, as that is the normal max usage of beginners and that younger people can afford. Mods keep the links working. Pages with links to bikes that are 1, 2, 3, 4, 500 pounds as the best ones seem to stand out. Perhaps 5-7 and 7 to a grand too. Just have under the link good and bad points, that are moderated.0

Like this one? Needs updating, but shows a lot of them (an older ones).

What bike page?.......... just quicklink it to the Halfords web page ....... i'm sure this forum takes a comission off Halfords!Orange 5 Pro 650b 2014

They offer very good value at all price points, and are multi award winners on this website and the magazines. No commission, just some of the best bikes for the money.0

You'll also note the Decathlon Rockriders come highly recommended. So have you got something against Decathlon as well?2011 Carrera Fury

He just seems to miss the point that in the budget category, Halfords and Decathlon can't be beaten. Buy lots, sell lots with low margins. They make money, punter gets a good deal.
Nothing wrong with Paul's and other shops with sales, but like CRC, the deals are on older stock with limited sizes. Great if they have what you want - my current bike came from there.I don't do smileys.

Do the bikes from Evans cycles come assembled? Plus has anyone heard anything good about the Specialized Rockhopper 2012?0
-
Depends what you mean by assembled. If from the shop, yes, if delivered, you probably need to straighten the bars and put the saddle and wheels on.
They should be adjusted etc in the shop then reboxed.
Link to the bike- there is more than one model.I don't do smileys.

So you wouldn't recommend any Specialized bikes at all?0
-
Currently have three Specialiseds in the house, so nothing against them, but I wouldn't recommend any in the budget range - much better deals for the money elsewhere.I don't do smileys.

Ok, my local bike shop is a Merida dealer and I'm thinking because of the convenience of I might go through him but I wondered what the general thoughts on the MATTS TFS range were?
