I have a 90's raleigh summit which is currently sat in the shed not doing anything. I would like to convert it from a 21 speed Mtb into a single speed commuter but I'm not sure what I can keep / adapt or what I need to buy in order to carry out the conversion. Can anyone recommend and websites or give me any advice on what I need to covert to the world of single speeding?

  • ive recentlyish done this on an old bike for the school run,
spacing wise out back, pop to your lbs and see if they have any Scrap old cassettes, ideally 3 as you'll need to split them for the plastic spacers, (a packet of chocolate biscuits is often appreciated for such items!! ;-) ) you casn also use one of the cogs for the basck too,
single chain ring up front obviously,
for a tensioner ive used an old mech, chopped the jockeywheel cage off just under the top pulley and run the chain under the cog! then just a chain that fits,
i started mine off on 32/16 and quickly swapped the back out for a 14, ive used it around the village and its fine, occasionally put the littluns trailer on it, ideal as a round the village hack bike instead of the Soul!!!

if you want a Proper Kit for doing it then have a look on either superstar or On one,

thinking about it, being a 90's bike May have a screw on freewheel rather than a std. cassette body as we use now, if so, then a std bmx/kids bike freewheel cog will do it!!
    Timmo.
