I've just bought a second hand ultegra 6700 crankset to replace my weighty old one- my current bottom bracket is dying rather loudly so I've used this as an excuse to upgrade. I could do with a little help on which BB would be compatible, does it have to be an Ultegra one or could I step down a few notches (money is an issue...)?

sure the road ones are all the same design other than the thread. BSA or Italian.

Shop around though because you can pick the Ultegra ones up cheap on-line.

Tiagra, 105, Ultegra and Dura Ace Hollowtech II bottom brackets are all interchangable.

Thanks for that- gone for a relatively cheap ultegra 6700 BB.
Next question, will I need two different BB tools to remove the previous one and then install the next?
The old one is a square taper like this: Shimano-UN25-68x110-ST.jpg

Yes different tools. Park do good long lasting ones that don't break the bank.
