Hello, I have recently bought a bike and am looking at helmets, I have narrowed it down to a few but I can't decide, expert opinion please?

Helmets:
1. http://www.wiggle.co.uk/hardnutz-hi-vis ... ng-helmet/ (HardNutz Hi-Vis)
2. http://www.rutlandcycling.com/40662/Gir ... ours-.html (Giro Savant)
3. http://m.evanscycles.com/products/speci ... t-ec025853 (Specialized Echelon)
4. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mobi ... elID=70004 (Giro Monza)

Is there any difference between 2&3?
Is it necessary to have a neon helmet? (I will be using this go racing as well as normal cycling)
Is 4 any better than the rest?

And which would you recommend?

Thanks ed

Nobody should be 'recommending' this helmet or that helmet.
If it works for you, looks decent, does not make your head look like a flatulent toadstool, straps easy to adjust and does not slip.. can get a cap under it for the winter time then it is the helmet for you.
if you race then yes you will need to wear it and you'll want one that you can forget about when it is on your head.
Neon.. like the I might pull the trigger on to replace my Spesh s works..?
    Colour not relevant.

the best helmet is one that fits - Rudy helmets are comfy, but I fall between their sizing ranges. I always though the Specialised Prevail was a hell of a lot of money, until I tried it one..... I know own one, and it is superb in hot weather

Just buy the one that fits.

My Spesh echelon makes my head look like a giant mushroom (as I'm between sizes M and L).. but its the most comfortable one that I could try on locally so I bought it.

Will Probably go for a Kask next as I've found a local stockist and they fit better.

Bontrager Circuit helmet for me...had good reviews and fits me well. Medium size is 56-60cm and my head's 59cm :D

Only slight downside is that the strap tends to somehow work loose between rides and I have to tighten it up every time.

A few other points from me.

Yep get something that fits, but other things I have found useful features are

    1. easy adjustment via a microdial or something
    2. a mesh for insects
    3. Removable peak

Also, consider different sizes as in winter I use mine with a woolly cap, as its gets pretty cold

    I got the Bontrager Circuit.

Gets highly rated (5/5 stars) in Cycling Plus so I went with that

Haven't tried all of the above,
but tried bell, specialized, UVEX and Giro,
by far, Giro Aeon is the best, super light weight, great shape around the head (compared to Ionos) and great ventilation.

I recently bought the Giro Savant based on a good review in cycling plus. It's cheaper than many of the helmets - I got it for £37. It's certainly a step up from my specialized max in terms of weight, ventilation and sweating.

I don't have any experience of the others, but so far I'm very happy.

I have a massive head. Just bought an Echelon in large flavour and it is the first helmet I have worn which fits me well. Very comfortable and actually covers a large part of my head rather than just sitting on top like all the others have.

Yet to ride with it so can't comment on airflow and cooling.

Actually tend to have a large head as well,
Giro Aeon suits well, better than the Echelon for me,
but this is personal of course

Since posting that, I have worn the Echelon daily on my commute and also for longer Sunday rides.

Found I was getting a headache after about an hour on the first long ride but then realised the clicky adjuster was a bit tight - head must have swollen with heat. Apart from that, no problems. Comfortable, keeps my head reasonably cool and I think, as helmets go, it's fairly good looking (shame about the rider underneath it).

Kask K10 Diechi. 1 size fits all, and it really does - very comfortably too. It'd even fit Kryton's head.

Just bought a new lid yesterday. The guy in the shop spent time to explain all the little differences and benefits and after trying on about 8 different ones from different brands and prices etc. I settled on the Kask Mojito.

Ok so it is not particularly cheap (£100) but it was by far the best for me (light, easy adjusted, fit, comfort shape etc).

What was interesting is that all the helmets are tested to the same standard so no one helmet can be stated as offering any more protection than the next (despite prices from £30 to £200).

The Giro and Specialized came a close second but they lost out due to the ultimate fit of the kask (for my head).

Depends how you look at it - it's massively cheaper than an Aeon yet about the same weight. You'll struggle to get another lid that light for the money.
