Hello all,
I have recently bought a road bike to replace my hybrid, nothing special a cb echelon, anyway I have been riding along the front at new Brighton, from Harrison drive to seacombe ferry, I was just woundering if any of our Wirral members could recommend some cycle routes for me to try on my own to increase my miles from 10-12 on my first couple of rides. Maybe willaston .? . I am also thinking about removing the toe clips and putting flats back on as I am not confident enough with the clips yet. Any thought or ideas much appreciated. :)

The Burton routes are quite good not much traffic and decent non flat sections. I like route to West Kirby as the full colum road has a decent climb. I just tend to turn down a new road every ride to have a little explore.

I hope the copy and paste works

If you are going to ride in the Burton area it wold be a shame to miss out on a nice little climb. Denhall Lane is near the bottom of route 4.

It is not the longest climb in the world but pretty steep (8%/9% in places) and I find it a good test. My climbing has improved a hell of a lot by including it on my routes.

If your after a few challenging climbs as a newbee to build fitness then boathouse lane Parkgate and the Heswall bends are pretty good. I have done these a few times and my times are dropping quick.
It may be worth creating a circular route from your home and every week just expand that route by a couple of miles.

I went from 6 miles when I got the bike to now 42 miles in 8 weeks so decent progress. I am hoping to build up to 60-70 miles in the next 2 or 3 months

    Hi all.,

Just tried a ride in willaston,,started at clatterbridge hospital, along clatterbridge road, right onto Thornton common road, then left after seven stars onto raby road, then left on to raby mere road, and left again onto willaston road over round about onto clatterbridge road back to car. Did it quicker than I thought but had to get home for something? Starva has it as 4.5 miles in 22.05 mins. Might do the loop twice tommorow or carry on through thornton hough to the Chester high road. Turn left onto upper raby road to make a bigger loop, traffic was a bit scarey but I'm sure I will get used to that. My average speed was 12.1 mph. Thanks for all the info, now I know I can get up gradual hills on a road bike it has given me much confidece, and must admit I'm fitter than I thought for an ex smoker ( 1 year ) 47 , and 15 stone . I have the confidence to try more, I'm so glad I bought a road bike. :D:lol: 8)

Theres plenty of options in the wirral lanes - just riding randomly is a good way to discover new routes. Dont forget the Eureka cafe at Two Mills. Plenty of groups go from there and you can avoid the A540 mostly by going thru Capenhurst and the back lanes.
  • I live in Great Sutton and Parkgate via the road running past Ness Gardens is a nice run, with a cup of tea from the 'famous' ice cream shop. The road down to Burton is great, but i've only done the climb a couple of times so it's still a bit of a killer. I'd say a trip to Eureka is a must, although I've not plucked up the courage to venture back there yet (I used to be there every week as a teenager).

I'd steer clear of the Wirral Way with you road bike though.
Still trying to convince the missus of the n+1 rule...!

Wirral Way is fine for road bikes - the surface is better than the average potholed roads we have. Just dont treat it as a race track - theres a lot of walkers, kids and dogs.
