this is the pump i already have

    http://www.topeak.com/products/Pumps/MiniG

is it adequate/small enough for a road bike?

I've used it a few times on my MTB and endure motorbike and thought it was poor to be honest.

Lezyne make some nice pumps and they also do a couple of bottle cages that incorporate pump holders, depending on your taste and bike frame: http://www.lezyne.com/bottle-cages-category (the ones with models names ending HP and HV). The pumps also come with a plastic holder that fits under a regular bottle cage, as with your Topeak - or at least my one did.

    Cheers they look pretty descreet.

I think I will try my topeak one and see how it goes unless I see a much smaller/lighter one.

I suppose they don't look too bad or get in the way on the down tube.

I found my old pump does do presta fittings too by swapping the inside spacer the other way round.

I bought an elite bottle cage and bottle. Seems to match my bikes colour so hopefully should be ok.

I think I will invest in a large pump for at home too - or are the presta adapter hoses ok to use with a regular foot pump?

Your pump goes in your middle jersey pocket
Tacx tao's are good bottle cages

ah right thanks - some of my jerseys back pockets don't have zips. will this still be ok?

does hard stuff in your back pockets not irritate?
  • sticking your mini pump in your jersey pocket just lets others know you're a "proper" cyclist. Mine goes on my frame behind my bottle cage, that way I know that it's with me EVERY time I go out for a ride. The one time you forget to stick it in your pocket will the time you pun*ture.

I must admit to having mine on a holder attached to the bottle cage. It doesn't look great on the bike I have to say but I genuinely don't like the thought of a piece of metal resting against my back if theres an off. Maybe I'm overly cautious but it seems like a good way to make sure of a good back injury.

i tried this to peak pump mini pump again tonight to top up my MTB tyre and it just doesn't work. pumping away like a lunatic and it just doesn't make a difference

I've tried it many times on various bikes/motorbike and it never seemed to work - i just thought it must need ALOT of pumping to work

looks like I'm going to bin it and try a different one

"proper cyclists' don't use pocket-size mini-pumps as experience has taught them they're useless bike ornaments. Either go for a frame-fit pump or something more substantial like a Lezyne Micro-drive.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

I'm probably not a 'proper cyclist' but I am a sucker for shiny shiny things, so I carry two CO2 canisters and an adaptor.

lezyne road drive is a good mini pump that you can actually get a decent pressure with but it's too expensive to put in an open pocket and risk losing so I use the frame clip.

i stripped my topeak pump down yesterday and noticed the seal on the piston was pinched a bit and was letting air escape thru the bottom of the pump

i greased all the o rings, greased the piston and squeezed a load of 3 in 1 oil in the cylinder and it works fine now.

looks like there was a leak and thats why it never worked from day 1!

i think i will just keep this on my mountain bike and get a new one for my new road bike as it looks a bit too 'used' to fit on a nice new road bike and i think its too big to fit in my back pocket
