faffed DHX4

Cause;
The lift attendant strapped a bungee cord over the stanchion of the DHX4 to hold the bike to the ski lift putting a lot of side loading in the middle of the shock.
Issue;
Loss of rebound and pissing oil from the collar (where the stanchion enters the can).
Mechanic's fix;
He opened up the collar and refilled it with oil, I don't know how much he put in. Rebound now seems fine and I think the sag is correct, but I can't get anywhere near full travel. I'm wondering if he put in too much oil.
Questions;
Do you think that I should open up the collar and draw some oil with a syringe until I get full travel? Will it spit everywhere if I open the collar now I've cycled it through it's travel a few times?
Thanks very much, this is the first day of our 12 day riding holiday - I'll be very upset if I'm stuck with a fooked shock.
