What to eat before very early rides i.e. 5am!

  • Speaking of diets, I'm a recent convert to the principal of not eating too late in the evening. I'm usually an evening rider and wouldn't get back home and have me tea 'till 9/9:30, sometimes 10pm. I haven't bothered this week, usually skipping the evening meal altogether, and I've felt much better and haven't missed the food at all.
  • Contrary to some of the above, I've only made very slight changes in my diet to fuel cycling. I eat and drink too much anyway, so there's plenty left over for a bike ride or two! I should say that weight loss has been a primary aim - 2 1/2 stone since March. The only consistent change in diet i've made is to have a small breakfast every day (2 slices of toast +/- boiled eggs) and a glass of milk in the evening if I feel like it.

That's a small lie - I did have 4 pieces of toast for breakfast before cycling 70 miles a couple of days ago.

Initially I went down the 'eat more to fuel cycling and recovery' route, before remembering that I actually wanted to encourage an energy deficit.
