With all the news over Wiggo beginning his racing career there and honing his skill as a youngster do you think it'll now get the funding it deserves?

It's been getting a lot of exposure on TV news lately (liked BBC Breakfast's Who-soundtracked snippet on Monday morning!) which can only be a good thing. Plus it's the only venue from the last London Olympics still in use for competitive sport, so this year its media profile should rise considerably and hopefully send a bit of cash its way. Thanks to the new surface and fencing it's already looking way less shabby than a couple of seasons back.

I used to play rugby league on the pitch in the middle. The track was a right mess back then.

There's a great article in Rouleur this month with Tony Doyle who is part of Southwark's Olympic legacy team and by the sounds of it HH's future looks very bright.

Wiggo could afford to pay for it himself now

well so far I'm still supporting it by a small monthly DD to friends of HH velodrome and no news on the facebook page. Cetainly the old buildings still need to be replaced. I must say I miss the look of the wooden walls around the track.

as was Herne Hill, according to Herne Hill

    Modernizing the track

By the end of the 1980’s the old Olympic track had reached the end of its life and Sport England (then Sports Council), with assistance of EEC funding, financed a £1.5m rebuild. The new track was very advanced and extremely fast as evidenced by a succession of new records. The new track had a much steeper banking than before & the white track surface was not concrete but a synthetic epoxy screed surface that when first built, dried quickly after rain in the spring and summer. It inevitably proved vulnerable to build-up of algae during the wet winter months and even with regular cleaning, it became unsafe to use in the winter months. The grandstand was also closed off in the early 2000s after years of neglect by the operator.
