and tonight it is going in the washing machine. A colleague said he put his S-Works lid into the washing machine in a bag and it worked a treat.

Is there a reason I really shouldn't do this? Was he lucky and will mine crumble?

It's the straps that look (and I presume smell) grotty...and I can't remove them.

Stand in the shower with your helmet on.

Put a little shampoo in it whilst you shower.

Just make sure you remember to wash both helmets.

Either being smelly is not cool.

If you bang your head getting into the shower will it be the helmet that you KNOW saved your life?

I can't believe you put a helmet in the washing machine! Surely the detergent and all that bashing around is going to affect how strong it is... They're not designed to be chucked about in a washing machine drum!

Are helmets really meant to get quite that wet?

I'm pretty sure they can. I have the model down from you, and those straps are pretty easy to remove. More tricky to re-thread, but not that difficult.

If you ARE going to put it in the washer I'd put it in the next time you do a "towels" wash.

    1) towels mean padding
    2) if you stick it on on it's own it's going to make one hell of a racket on the spin cycle

For some reason this thread makes me think of these:

I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Well I went for it. I put the helmet in a pillow case and put other clothing in the machine as per normal. 30 minute short cycle (I don't mean I went for one, that's the wash programme I selected!).

It came out looking new, put it in the warm sun and it was dry within 10 minutes, wore it again this morning. I'm sure no manufacturer would suggest doing it but I was willing to take the risk.

Didn't actually say did I. Yes, the smell has been eradicated 100%, my helmet is smell free, clean...and shiny.

    Thanks.

Where the hell are you putting your helmet to make it smell that bad?
