Hi
I have a CAAD10 which has a 25mm tall headset top cap marked up as Tange Seiki. I would like to reduce the height of this to drop the stem, and was wondering whether anyone else has done it, and what top-cap they used?

Thanks

The top cap only serves to clamp the steerer in place, the height of the stem is dictated by your fork steerer length and any spacers fitted under the stem to take up any difference in the steerer length versus headset tube length.

If you want to lower the stem you need to remove any spacers and cut the forks down to suit.

apologies. to be clear, i'm on about the uppermost headset component, the tapered spacer/cover that encloses the top bearing... not the top cap as such

    Also this

Sure I've read on weightweenies in the CAAD thread that there is a readily available cap that most local bike shops should hold in stock that reduces the stack height by a huge amount although not quite to the standard of the above link.
  • I have the veloflyte and it works great. It could be a little more heavy duty, but overall it does the job you want it to by decreasing the stack height to almost zero. With the Veloflyte you can have your stem basically right on top of the headtube. I also have a friend who just took off the 25mm spacer and just has the top bearing exposed. Not my personal suggestion, but it can be done that way too. The 25mm spacer is nothing more than a tall dust cap.

thanks for that. Doug at Veloflyte is actually making a custom CAAD10 one since i enquired, so i'll feed back on how that pans out when I receive it.

Too bad. There's a guy on London Fixed gear and single speed who has 5 of those paper-thin 0.4mm bearing covers in your size and will have them to you within 48 hours for £10.

Would it work on a cannondale slice 2010 model? Mine has a 25mm conical spacer which I would like to lower.

    Thanks

most likely. i'll dig out the measurements from my caad10.

Doug at Veloflyte should have the made to measure caad10 cover ready in the next week or so, or you could always give the his standard one a whirl if this chap in London has some available. If the slice is the same as the caad10, you'll need a new of the microspacers underneath it to stop it fouling the top of the headtube.

The caad10 specific veloflyte cover has a fractionally larger diameter than the standard one, but a rather shallower profile, as the top bearing hardly protrudes above the headtube.

to wrap this up, i have received my custom top cap cover from Doug at Veloflyte and it is brilliant. wafer thin, strong, and you can't even feel that it has any weight at all!
it matches the outside diameter of the CAAD10 headtube perfectly, and looks great.

i would definatley recommend it to any other CAAD10 owners out there who are looking to reduce their stack height.
