By definition, a U-trun is to go back from where you came. Team Sky have progressed further forward than they expected at this time and so Brailsford has to re-evaluate their goals for the future in GC terms - a very business like approach.

Brailsford says he would be sad to see Cav go but isn't going to hold him back if he wants to - a mature and responsible approach to allow both to continue to achieve to their maximum potential.

Could read that either way. To me it sounds like DB is being clear about the Teams ambition and future focus. If asked how does that work for Cav then he is saying this is our raisin d'être and if Cav feels its not for him then I won't stand in his way.

He also says "He is a prolific British winner and we would love to have a prolific British winner on the team."

It is just great to have a great British cycling team and I hope there remains a place for Cav.

I would be surprised if he wanted to. He must be on mega bucks with sky and despite not having a team for him he still won three stages and in Paris.

  • Personally I hope Cav goes to another team, as good as it may be to have a British team with the best British riders i'd like to see Cav go on and win more stages, I missed the Manx Missle fighting for the green jersey this year. For me the the green jersey was rather dull this year with no one really fighting Sagan for it. Cav was/is a great team player though the way he sacrified the glory of stage wins to become a team player at Sky and go back and forth with bottles etc. but while he can still fly past everyone on the end straight and take the stage win i'd like him to try and beat Merckx's record.

Cannot fault Cavendish for the way he has conducted himself in this years Tour. He's a proud man and rightfully so but it must have took balls for him to take a backseat on this one. Seeing him take on domestique duties in the World Champs jersey several times this year has been fantastic and shows the class of the man. He's done that jersey proud.

Maybe he will decide to move on, maybe he won't. I suspect his passion for winning would probably outweigh his desire for money. I don't think he will find another team like HTC no matter how hard he tries in all honesty.

Question would need to be : Which teams would have c €2.5m per year for him, that don't have GC ambitions?

Saxo-Tinkoff have talked about being interested, but they're a total GC squad. BMC could fund it, but they are a GC team

    Katusha?

    Get him in quick step.

    If only they could pay.

    Would suit him well.

Team full of roulers who have nothing to do in GTs.

Omega Pharma Quick Step is the obvious one. Lots of ex-HTC & Brian Holm as well.

I agree apart from the bit about leaving Sky, but the truth of this year was that Cav was never going to fight to retain the green jersey as his ambition lies in an Olympic Gold medal. He still won three stages and I do believe he will go on to become the all time TDF stage winner, overtaking Merckyx's record within the next three years. It's his call whether he believes he can do this with Sky.

The sub-text of this to me appears to be:

We only wanted Mark in case Brad turned out to be a donkey. Thank **** things worked out and we have 2 epic GC riders, so we can get rid of him.

I actually read this a bit differently... I was wondering if Dave B was quietly putting a 'For Sale' sign up here. Cav is awesome and yesterday's stage brought tears to my eyes but Cav takes up a slot in a nine man roster that could be much better used elsewhere in a pure GC team (look at USPS/Disco - they would never have wasted a place on someone who wasn't dedicated to getting Lance his win).
So - Dave lets the world know he won't kick up a stink, Cav moves on (maybe) and Dave has an extra place (and £x million a year extra) to play with. Machievellian - maybe... But no-one knows better than DB how hostile contract negotiations can get when you start on the wrong foot!

Possibly. I think he'd do well at Garmin as well, except I doubt they could afford his salary.

They're all old at Garmin too.

They're not short of cash. They've got a rich Czech bloke financially backing them.

Doesn't mean they couldn't put a train together though. Just tell them all they are doing a TTT on every sprint stage...

It looked like being a story until the last bit about Brailsford wanting them to continue working together.

    Interesting nonetheless.

Holm said he saw an unhappy Cav at this years tour. And Lefevre said he wanted cav. He's getting an awesome chance to get Olympic gold, which is why he played bottle carrier, and sky got a years worth of publicity of having the rainbow stripes say SKY above them. I think both sky and cav know they'll be parting ways.

I'd be a little disappointed if he did leave. If things had gone slightly differently he could have had another stage or two this year but he got three and was part of a TDF winning team. He also got 3 in the Giro. This year is a slightly odd one however with the Olympic focus.

Going forward I can see that the focus being on GC is going to be of some concern but he's never going to get an HTC scenario ever again.

As has been said previously he is not awash with option as whoever took him on would have to change the focus of their team entirely. Unless its OPQS in which case they are in a field of one and why would they feel the need to pay the cash.

I disagree. There are at least 4 teams trying to emulate HTC right now. It just happens that, with one exception, their sprinters suck.

Who are the 4? I assume GreenEdge? Lotto? Argos?

I bet VDB would be delighted if Cav landed there.

Doesn't it depend on how good Wiggo is next year as if Froome is the tour GC contender then Brad does make a pretty awesome lead out man along with Rogers and EBH.

Yes. Also Garmin, when they can be bothered to make an effort (although it must be sickening to put a train together for a sprinter who hardly ever wins).

No. You'll be in exactly the same position as this year. GC will be too important to risk on a sprint day.

Strange thing to say, particularly on the day when the team has just won the TdF.

It almost sounds like he's admitting that that they shouldn't have signed him.

Seems every time Cav gets involved with Wiggins & Brailsford, Cav gets f*cked.
