Hi guys I am new to the forum hello etc

I have joined the forum for abit advice really, I have two aims really I want to lose abit weight get abit leaner gradually.

And next year for charity I am going to do the coast to coast. Ie south shields to Whitehaven which is 120 odd miles. Problem is last bike I had was stolen from outside my work, I really fancy for a change getting a road bike rather than mountain bike.

I am from a sporty ish back ground but lately the only really exercise i have had is running with my 3 siberian huskies 2-3 days a week and walking them 3-5miles a day. Also i really really wanna get some bodyweight off i am weighing in at just under 100kilos bodyweight. I have huge muscley legs thankfully (ex rugby player prop forward) so plan is diet down as i am doing this get down to about 70-75k my goal.

I have a dilemma I don't have a clue what road bike to buy

My budget is 150-300 max

I saw a bike on eBay called the Viking giro d italia

Which I was considering but I don't know what spec is like I have seen 4 I like

and i was looking at this one to get me started quick but its a cheap bottom end one i would probably sell in 6months. I am paid in next couple of weeks cash is abit tight this month just paided out 400 getting my car fixed

  • Cant say they are bad, but the triban 3 gets the vote for the best £300 bike.

Buy secondhand at that budget - Spesh Allez, Giant Defy, Trek 1.2 all within budget.

Viking bikes are a pile of sh*te by the way.

one of the mags gave a group test to the triban 3 (£300) over bikes costing £500/700/900

I think Viking was an old British brand that has been re introduced but now foreign owned/manufactured. :?:
I have a Viking hardtail that I use as a run about or when cycling with the family. For the money I paid it is actually a really nice Bike (note that I said for the money :) )

The spec v cost of the Triban3 makes it my choice for your budget though.

Well decision is made i am hanging fire on the bike front

my work i have just found out do a bike to work scheme, but i cant apply till later in the year as they just do it every six months.

have decided to go for a mountain rather than road bike, too many nutter car drivers on road/plus been doing alot of research and bulk of coast too coast is old railway lines.

I can get upto 1000pound in budget but and i would pay monthly but finances are tight so i am going to limit myself too 500 so i aint paying 70-100pm out on a bike.

What are you guys thoughts on these

if your going for a mtb then you are probably better off posting on the mtb section.

If you are looking to do a bit of both (off/on road) then have you looked at cyclocross or hybrids?
