best non suspension bike

hi, i am looking for a non suspension bike and would like some help please. i had an old non suspension bike but it had really bad impact at the front as well as having a diamond back curaco. this is an awesome bike trouble is i have lost this bike as my wife loves it as she hates womens bike frames. i mainly used it for commuting not real off road use. had my wifes full suspension bike but hate it so its now my sons. the bike i am looking for i dont want twist shift as dont like them as well.

can anyone help please

If it's just for the road I'd just get something off Ebay or look on www.retrobike.co.uk for something interesting.
Without having to worry about suspension, everything is simple enough to sort out.
My current rigid pub bike type thing cost me about £20 all up.

Carrera Subway at Halfords? Rigid, 24 spd non grippy shifts and disc brakes. Quite a nice looking bike too.

Otherwise there are a load of generic flat bar road bikes for grabs on ebay from various sellers which arent ridiculously heavy or badly equipped.
