Hub size help...

Hi All,

I have done a search of the forum and still find myself a little confused over hub sizes for a new rear wheel.

My Bike: 2011 Rockhopper Pro

What I want: As stiff as possible axle option for the rear wheel.

My understanding is that I can fit 135x10mm axle(135x12mm would not fit, right?). Where I'm struggling is, will the 10mm axle offer me a stiffer rear? What do I need to do skewer wise?

This is the hub I would like - Hope Pro2 EVO

Do I just need something like this for the skewer?: Superstar QR

I think I'm on the right track with this but would like some clarification. Or if you have a better suggestion, I'm keen to hear that too.

Thanks,

Mike

You wont notice much increase in stiffness on a hardtail form the 10mm qr. I changed my hope hub to 10mm and used on of them QRs on my enduro and didn't notice any difference (solved the problem with the creaky old qr though). It's probably the wheel that's flexing and the new wheel, as long as it's well built, will hopefully flex less.

The wheel on the back of my 29er was flexy as a cheese string so I got my nipple wrench out and tightened it up, all the non-drive side spoke were loose, now it wobbles all over but at least it's stiff and doesn't feel like it's going to collapse when I ride round corners. I'll get round to straightening it (or getting someone else to) at some point though.
I love horses, best of all the animals. I love horses, they're my friends.

    Your dropouts are 135x10mm

10mm through axel hubs will need a 10mm axle or Qr.

That's what I thought. So for clarification, the hub I linked will fit and the QR's I linked will do the job of holding it in the frame?

    Yes, with the right adaptors.

Why not just get a superstar set up? The hubs are just as good, and a lot cheaper.

Are you on commission supersonic? :P

Seriously though, I've not looked in to superstar before now. So thanks for the tip! For nearly £100 less it's got to be worth a go.

If only I had known that before I replaced my front wheel...
