A short stem will make the bike more twitchy, so will need to be combined with a wider handlebar to compensate.
Generally, for every cm you take off the stem, you want to add about 2 to the bar.0 -
What bars do you have at the minute? I'd be tempted to start with an 80mm stem for xc/trail work.0

Oh, just to add, the £30 on one cnc stem is identical to the £45 superstar zephir cnc stem. I have the on one in 70mm flavour and have had no issues with it-it just works. Light too. Also consider the KCNC offerings at clee cycles.0

i have Ritchey WCS Riser Handlebar 660mmplay hard ride hard0

I'd definitely try 80mm to start - look at Exotic stems too.0

You can run a 50mm stem, but you should really be looking at getting at least a 700mm bar to go with that0 -
Unless he has narrow shoulders - and as XC and trail bikes often have steeper head angles, a longer stem might suit better anyway.0

My point was that if you go for a 50mm stem, you really need 700+ bars. If your shoulders or whatever dont allow you to have 700+ bars, a longer stem should be used instead.0 -

I just don't agree that is true for all - for many it may help, but I know plenty who run shorter bars with shorter stems. It depends on so many things.0 -

+ large potato.
It's what ever works best for the individual. There is no rule of stem length and bar length!0
