Canyon Nerve XC Vs AM 6.0

Hiya,

Going to invest in a entry level Canyon full bouncer later this year - so XC 6 or AM 6.

They describe the XC and a good "all rounder" - how true is this?

I essentially want a ride that'll be able to take me "getting my shred on" (as others have put it), along trails and fast singletrack.

Exactly the type of riding in this video:

Would the AM be total overkill, or would the XC be slightly underbeefed?

Cheers.

As the guy in the video is doing it on a long travel hard tail I should imagine that the XC6.0 would handle that sort of ride (barring the end bit with the cliff), well at least I hope it will, as im intending to take mine down some welsh red/black runs in August. The XC is a good bike in my limited experience of 3 bikes, its light and it climbs really well and descends just as good.

I haven't ridden either but looking at the geometry I'd say go with the AM, it's not quite as stretched out as the XC and 20mm extra travel never hurt anyone trying to have fun. The downside is the 1Kg weight penalty but I reckon you'd notice that far less than the general ride characteristics. The XC also looks like it has a QR fork, I'd go bolt-thru every time (like on the AM). Ultimately either bike would probably be just fine for what you want but if fun factor is more important than getting the lightest possible option I'd go with the AM.

    Fun factor is very important.

I'm not too obsessed with the weight, 1kg isn't too much in my opinion.

Thanks for the reply, two different views there. Keen to hear more!

I had this debate, and as I'm keeping my hardtail for the lighter stuff I went for the AM (7.0, but essentially the same argument), thinking the XC was not as much of a differential.

    That's what I did !

To op get the am .....
  • I went for the AM because of the bolt through, have always found that it makes the difference.
  • I went for the AM, I was prepared to haul the extra weight for the added ruggedness. Although in reality 95% of the time the XC would be more than enough for me.
I assume your looking at the equivalent priced XC as the AM 6?

Some good responses here, thanks. The bolt through axle would be a massive bonus on the AM.

I'd probably save the difference and just get the 6.0 XC (if I we're to get the XC) - not sure haven't thought that far!

Tho atm i'm leaning a lot more towards the AM.

Hi, had this same dilemma about this time last year, switching from an anthem to a canyon. In the end I opted for the am, figured I wanted a big step up in travel if I was investing so much! Not regretted it at all so far. The extra weight hasn't been a massive issue, and the talas forks mean you can lock dwn to 120mm for climbing or for easier single track, then crank it out to 150 for bigger descents!
The extra travel has made a big difference to my downhill speeds and also the level of technical stuff I'll attempt, much, much more confident now, although you could argue that the bike is a skill compensator!

At some point i am going to manage to jump one of these things.....

The Nerve XC and Nerve AM have normal QR rear axles, the Strive and Nerve CF have bolt through. Also it's worth bearing in mind Canyon have a sale around late September if you're not in a rush.

That's my plan, how do you find it on long XC rides?

Done a few fairly long Xc rides on my am, absolutely fine. Does feel heavy on the longer hills, but makes up for it on the downs!
As to the bolt thru, I think it's supposed to make it stiffer and therefore more responsive?

True, and they may not have the model you want in the sale, but if you sign up for their news letter then you get a heads up and access to buy the sale bikes about 24 hours earlier than they go live on the main website.

I will go sign up to that now... tho I wasn't planning on buying until early next year - but if a deal is too good to pass up...!

For what it's worth last year I received the email about the sale on 8th September and the 2012 bikes were made available to order on 11th October.

In that case I might hold out and bag a 2013 model nice and early. Could be fun. Cheers.
