Is there a knack to getting these off? After 10 mins and grease everywhere I ended up just breaking the chain with a chaintool. KMC even do a Missing Link remover tool but isn't that defeating the purpose of these things?! Grrrrrr!

    - Put on gloves

    - Leave slack in chain

    - Hold nearside half of link between index finger and thumb of right hand

    - Hold farside half of link between index finger and thumb of left hand

    - Move right hand to the left whilst simultaneuously moving left hand to the right

    - Cry because you forgot to put newspaper down on your cream carpet

  • It's probably full of crap, apply a quick squirt of WD40 on the link to loosen the grease before you undo it. Then change to small-small cogs and push the two sides together.

And give it a good squeeze and wiggle with a pair of plier.

I had one where the slot had the smallest notch at the end to stop it separating if you pedal backwards, and found that it needed some impossible to describe upwards lift whilst simultaneously pushing the end together.

You don't have the SRAM 10sp POWERlink do you? It's not reuseable...

    KMC still does one though
There is a rule for that

You just flex the chain in the wrong direction and they pop off.....

I read something a while ago that said if you're stuck out in the wilds with a really stubborn quick link you should put the chain on the big ring in such a way that the quick link is on there. lift one side of the quick link one tooth closr so that the quick link is stood up like a triangle. Then strike the quick link with a rock or something to push it apart.
Can't find the article with a link to show pictures so I hope that makes sense.
  • Was that the same article that had handy hints on drinking your own wee, and best ways to cook squirrel?

I seem to remember his um 'expertise' was more deplilatory than culinary. Either way I'm pretty sure there is a channel 5 series here somewhere.

Think it was in one of the cycling mag's (either Cycling Plus, or Cycling Active) over the last few months.

Or you could blow the link off with an air horn? Whilst filming it on your head cam natch.
  • I had a stubborn quick link that I couldn't shift and read somewhere that you need to push the two side plates together first (i.e. squeeze the link together side to side, not end to end). That "pops" the pin from the recessed bit, then it undoes easily.

Apologies if I haven't explained that well but it certainly worked for me.
