I have ultegra 6700 on my 2009 madone. Is it worth upgrading my crank set to dura ace 7800 if I am trying to reduce the weight of my bike or is it not worth it? Also how do I know it will fit thanks

Fit isn't a problem. Whether it's worth it, to you, as far as weight goes only you can answer. If you're dead set on reducing weight on your bike then go for it. Won't help you go any faster. FWIW I don't look upon it as an performance upgrade, more shiny bling than any real improvement on what you already have.

Yes it will fit and yes, its worth it - lighter, stiffer, cooler. Ultegra is rubbish I am afraid and you'll feel the difference straightaway (I didn't think much would happen when I dumped the Ultegra cranks I had and fitted FSA Pro carbon teams but the minute you jump on its like chalk and cheese - million times better).

The Ultegra cranks are now on the winetr bike and I cringe everytime my feet go near them.

Its a performance upgrade because its better than what you have at the moment. Far, far better.

    Just do it.

    Ultegra cranks rubbish? Yeah,right.

If you are generating enough power to make it in the pro peloton then maybe you will benefit from the performance advantage of DA compared to Ultegra. If not you are just spending money for the sake of it.

If you like the stuff, buy it. Just don't expect to go any faster.

Cool - two of us agree. Therefore the D/A cranks are now a necessity rather than a like.

    Buy them now.

If you are generating enough like of cycling to want the best and can afford it, then go D/A (or Red/Record)- otherwise stick middle of the road, stick with Ultegra, buy a Mondeo and marry a really bland burd when you could have had the delicious Victoria.

    Buy this, it's cheaper

Yes, I do have Dura Ace on one bike, and no, I don't go any quicker. Does look nice though.

weight difference will be minimal...full aluminium vs al cranks and composite chainring. you wont notice which is stiffer nor will it make you any quicker.

only pro is that DuraAce is pimping

if you wanna reduce weight there is lighter chainsets out there. but really if you just replace the chainset your only saving 50-150g at very most. I can lose that by taking a piss before a race

I have full 6700 on one bike and 7900 on my other. not alot in it really

Just buy the D/A otherwise you'll end up lonely, sad, living alone in a bedsit and eating microwaved Mars Bars.

Crikey there's some complete and utter nonsense been posted on this thread!! (and some pretty sound advice too!!) There is no point whatsoever in 'upgrading' to the DA cranks if you are looking for a performance gain. Yes they are lighter but it's very minimal and yes maybe they might be a tiny bit stiffer but the cost makes it utter madness to change. The overriding factor though is the fact that ALL Shimano cranksets are hideously ugly!! and will spoil the look of almost any bike they go near. If you want to 'upgrade' I would suggest you have a good look at some of the Carbon FSA chainsets such as the SL-K Light which uses hollow carbon cranks and will save you some weight, be super stiff and won't look like you've stuck a jelly mould on the side of your bike by mistake. The other alternative is to change your entire groupset to a decent Campagnolo one which is just better in every respect anyway!!

It's only taken 9 posts to invoke the cycling equivalent of Godwin's Law, where a discussion about Shimano (or Sram or other component manufacturer) is interrupted by someone spouting the predictable 'Campagnolo is perfect and everything else is cheap tat' line. We've heard it a thousand times, but the Campy fans never seem to tire of it.

To answer the OP's question- Ultegra is very good stuff, and I personally would spend the money elsewhere.

Buy DA and have wee wee and full on No. 2, then you'll be well ahead of the Ultegra crowd

It was said slightly 'tongue in cheek' (Campag' versus Shimano) so please try to spot it, there's a good chap!

    I'd have a big sh!t and stick to 105 :D

I've seen a couple of the GB Training bikes with Ultegra, Victoria Pendleton's training bike, surely can't be rubbish - I'm happy with Ultegra and 105 on my second bike.

save the money for better wheels, but if wheels are already sorted go for a rotor crankset, it's stiffer than the 7900 imo. I went to rotor q rings on a 7900 crank, improvement in stiffness from the 7900 rings was noticeable. Then went for the full crankset. Much more heel clearance too, if needed.

6700-7900, not that noticeable an improvement on performance. I've ridden both for a couple of years and concurrently. Also, yes a little vain, I'm not a fan of frankenstein groupsets.
