I am newish to commuting and I'm seeing cyclists that I'm following, albeit not 'on their wheel', pointing left or right with a finger held against the small of their back to indicate obstacles, glass etc. on the paths that should be avoided. Now I tend to work it out, based on which way the guy goes, but what's the rules here? I'm alright when I'm following, but I'd like to be doing my bit and be indicating anything to the occasional guys that follow me. What's the signs and the rules here? Looks like You point e.g left to show an obstacle on the left and therefore go right???

Thanks.

If they're pointing with their hand behind their back, they are not pointing at potholes or similar they're pointing to a large obsruction in the road that you will have to go around, the direction they point is the direction to go.

Potholes are normally just pointed at as you can go can avoid them however. Gravel/glass/rough stuff is normally done with a wave of the hand at the area.
