Flat pedals

Evening all, been riding mtb and road for years but have had a few years lay off due to family commitment. I'm looking on getting a mtb again for commuting and for a bit of weekend trail hacking. I've used spd's all my riding life but have recently started suffering from Morton's neuroma.
I've been looking at using some flat pedals. Does anyone use flats for xc and general riding anymore ????
Thanks
Al

Flat pedals for xc - yes. Used to use clips, changed to flats and no issues.
Just bought some five ten shoes (womens model as I have diddy feet! ) and some Sixty pedals for my DH bike to improve grip (old pedals were sh*t and my DC's were just falling to bits).Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0 -

Thanks guys some sound advice there. Secondly i presume any shoe i use on flats will have to have a fairly stiff sole for power transfer. Whats a good model or brand that wont break the bank?
Thanks again

Er he's talking about shoes now.
Cue 5.10 argument etc.
I use a 10 year old pair of trainers held together with mud and toe jam.I don't do smileys.

To be honest the power transferral thing will be minimal and unless you are min/maxing (which you wont be), then i wouldnt worry about it at all. A pair of skate shoes with flat rubber sole will be fine i am sure.0 -
I use fivetens, they are very stiff and grippy.
However any stiff soled skate shoe should be more than ok. I sometimes ride to work in my Duffs, they have a very flexible sole, I can feel my foot bending round the trainer. DCs seem way stiffer.0
