It is literally riding down hills, normally quite fast, usaully on technical courses with a big bike designed to do such a thing

Very slack head angle to put the riders weight back on steep decents and to allow smoother absorbsion of frontal hits with less freaky loading transmitted to the headtube/frame. It also means that on steep slopes the head angle is still favourable so steering control is maintained
    Slack seat angle.
Long travel suspension to absorb some very bit hits (8-10")
Triple crown fork to reduce twisting under big hits and to eliminate the traditional steerer (a weak point of bike design)
Very robust frame to hold it all together
Often single front ring, and close-ratio rear cassette (these machines generally aren't intended to be ridden uphill)

It's also best to dress like a motocross rider who got his head stuck in a toilet seat.

Downhill is the most fun you can have on a bicyce.
Mainly fast, steep and technical tracks with big jumps and drops.
A lot of xc and road riders seem to think downhill is for lazy riders but if your riding properly and getting in every opertunity to pedal then a fast downhill run can be as exhausting as a tough climb.
Most DH racers are pretty quick on an xc bike as well.

This is so true, pushing a DH as hard as you can is exhausting!

I will never forget my first DH race. Only a 1:15 track but I misted up my goggles and had to pull them off while pedalling flat out and at the end of my run I just collapsed on a tree trunk while trying to keep my breakfast down. Then I looked at the timing screen & realised how slow I was.
Second run was better after 3 energy gels and half a loaf of soreen and a couple red bulls! I was bouncing off the walls waiting at the start line :-)

Soreen before a ride. Ale & cake after.
