Morning All!
Firstly, I'm really sorry, sure you get asked this sort of thing all the time. I am a noob who has had my arm twisted into doing the coast to coast challenge next year. I'll be going with family, one of whom is a daily commuter and one of whom is a triathlete. I am the obvious weak link in our chain! The thing is, it turns out I'm actually quite enjoying it!
I've been training in the Yorkshire Wolds, not as much as I should maybe but I do have time on my side. I currently have a retro GT arrowhead as my bike, and its OK, but I can't help but notice how difficult it is for me to get up hills when my mate is spinning up them quite easily. I wanted a bike to do the C2C on anyway, but I think it would be best if I got one sooner rather than later. I was going to buy a subway but am not convinced this is suitable - I think I am after 700c wheels. I will be mostly on roads but want to be able to take the bike on gentle offroad terrain should I need to. I'm also aware from reading other threads that most of you do not think £350 is enough to spend on a bike but please humour me! I was hoping that you could give me opinions on the bikes below and possibly suggest any alternatives:
Carrera Crossfire - Seems OK but the Halfords thing puts me off
Jamis Allegro - I can't find much online about the bike
Trek 7.1FX
Ridgeback Comet/Comet SE - Whats the difference between these two, they are the same price?
Saracen Myth/Urban X1 - Not really fussed for suspension forks, do the Urban X1s lock out?
Scott - Have been told to visit our local shop who deal exclusively in Scott, a friend has said the owner will sort me out so I'm assuming he'll recommend a Sportster 60
Reading through the forums I notice a Specialized Sirrus is just out of my price range, is it worth spending the extra?
Does anyone have any other suggestions? Money's too tight to mention and I do want a decent one. Desperate not to let my family down on the trip!

In August last year I bought the 2011 Sirrus Sport for exactly £350. Very pleased with it indeed. That said I am now looking into a proper road bike and do have some regrets that I didn't do this in the first place.
The 2013 Specialized bikes have just come out so I'd expect the 2012 one to be on offer any day now.Black Specialised Sirrus Sport, red Nightvision jacket, orange Hump backpack FCN - 7

Thanks, much appreciated. As if by magic, Evans discount the higher end Sirrus range.... just got to wait for it to filter down I guess.
Unless you fancy selling yours when you get your roadue replacement?0 -
I will certainly be selling mine but unfortunately not just yet. Having been bitten by the cycling bug I used the cycle to work scheme to get a mountain bike. So now I am trying to wait out the 2.5 yrs until I can do another c2w for the road bike. Besides, not sure the Mrs would approve of 3 bike purchases in 12 months!Black Specialised Sirrus Sport, red Nightvision jacket, orange Hump backpack FCN - 7
