Hey Folks

Looking for some adice, all views welcome.

After years of riding new biuld up bikes, I've decided to go alone.

I had a £2k budget to build a bike to last me a few years.

I've spent £800 on a 2011 S works Tarmc SL3 with Specialized s works seat post.

Groupset - I've been looking at an Ultegra grey 6700 groupset - Any views? Bike shop said there isn't much difference between this and the Dura ace 7900.(£550)

Chainset - I'm watching some FSA SLK Light chainsets, they look the part, but I've seen some mixed reviews?(£150)

Handlebars - I do like the FSA K wing carbon, but surely bars are bars? they are going to be wrapped under tape anyway? I can get a carbon set for £40 or £100 for the FSAs.

Wheels - I like the dura ace C35 mostly for the looks. But I can get the C24's for £550 new.

Saddle - Again, other than weight is a saddle a saddle? Like the Fizik Arione approx £60.

Tyres - I've bought schwabb Ultremo HD 23mm. £50 for the set.

I'm 5ft 11 and 83kg's so I'm not worried about too many of the weight savings on the parts. Just want a good bike for hills/flat sportives.

Anyway, what's your views/suggestions?

Mark.

Groupset is personal preference I guess. I personally prefer SRAM so I'd get a Force groupset. Prefer the shifting and its a fair bit lighter than Shimano.

Chainset - As above, Id get the Force

Handlebars - Get the shape you like best, I like compacts. Alu is fine for me.

Wheels - Summat light, reliable and handbuilt. Atans Alphas on DT240 hubs, or Hope Hubs or PMP Hubs. You can get even lighter hubs, dunno how reliable they are though?

Saddle - Whatever you find comfy. I use an SLR cos its dead light and I find most saddles comfy really.
  • I've seen a few posts for people selling SRAM red groupsets around the £600 mark.

I currently have a trek 5.2 and specialized allez 27. Both have standard fit handlebars which are fine for me. Just wondered if there was an real difference.

I suppose some carbon bars soak up the road a bit better.

Personally I'd go for a brand new Force groupset over a used Red one (unless the Red had seen very little use). You know where you stand then.

I like a compact bar since they tend to have less reach than standard bars, therefore I can run a longer stem which I prefer.

  • Nick - I got brand new Dura Ace C24's with skewer brand new from Chain Reaction cycles. The SL3 I got on Ebay and there was a couple of SRAM red sets on the sales forum. Although, one was a 2010 set.
