First ride - correct technique?

So, I've just been out and done my first proper ride on my new bike. It was tough but I really enjoyed it!
I logged it with mapmyride and at the end i'd done 14 miles in 57 mins so I was more than happy with that. The route was more or less flat, with a few long but fairly gentle hills.
What I tried to do was maintain a constant cadence over the entire ride by using lower gears on the ups and higher gears on the downs, and letting my speed take care of itself accordingly. I was figuring that as I improve then the gears might go up as I'm able to maintain cadence in the higher cogs, so my speeds will go up. Am I taking the right approach, or should I be looking at it differently?
By the way, delighted with the bike. So much faster than the old mountain bike, although u could feel all the bumps through those narrow, hard tyres!
Cheers,
MarkP

Sounds good to me cap'n!
If you want to improve your speed though, you do want to be pushing yourself hard as well as doing what you're doing. Incorporate some sprints into your rides; eg 20 minutes each.0
