New Cleats/Old Pedals

Hello,
I've been riding my commuter on SPD cleats and Shimano 530 (I think) pedals for ages now. I do about 4000 miles a year at a bare minimum, in absolutely all weathers. I've just replaced the cleats after 2.5 years as they were worn to the bone.....the question is, do pedals suffer from the same wear? ie, should I replace those too?
Many thanks.

the retention and pop plates do wear out
but the mech moves so the wear is minimal, especially when they are lubed correctly, but they will wear out from use
and a new set starts at £16 or so (should come with cleats) its probably cheaper than buying cleats (£9), then finding out your pedals need binned too
