I just added up all the 'customisation' of my bike: £680!!!!

Jeez - adding a few parts really does add up!!!

I guess you don't notice the cost as it is usually spread out a bit!

haha - i surprised the velominati havent got a rule for costing the bike - sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Now add up all the "kit" that you "need" tools, clothing etc

My Missus would have fit if she knew but like you say as its little and often you dont realise.

When I first decided riding a bike would be a good thing I spend £70 on a Claud Butler Legend hybrid to ride to the station. It was more than I wanted to spend.

In two weeks its getting around £400 worth of upgrades.

This cycling lark, saves you money.

Never mind upgrades, the amount of locks needed for even a cheap bike. Having had one nicked I bought the EPO another station hack, all of £42. Rust and brush paint finish, basket and a 3 speed. Had to get over £100 worth of locks for a £40 bike.

Hmmm... I don't think I've spent that much myself...

    Lights
    Rack
    Pannier
    Tyres
    Frame pumps
Mudguards (2 sets.. one spectacularly broke)
Computers (3 of them... for 2 bikes. It made sense at the time)
    Rechargeable batteries
    Top end recharger
    Locks
    Bottle Cages
    Pedals

    Hmmmm...

I spent over £300 on lights....

    Bugger.

    Hmm, on the CX:
    Tyres
    Wheels
    Spiked tyres
    Handlebars
    Bar tape
    Stem
    Handlebars (again)
    Bartape
    Mudguards
    Saddle
    Seatpost
    Garmin 800
Best part of £200 worth of lights
    Shifters/brake levers
    Rear mech
    Cassette

So not much, and I sold the 'old' shifters and mech for more than the new stuff cost me, so I'm pretty sure I' m in profit.....

I tried that the first time. They used the pepper spray on me and made off with the bike I'd paid them to look after. But I had the last laugh, I was holding back the second half of their payment (a shilling) until I'd got the bike back safe and sound.

Building your own bike is so much more satisfying than buying a complete bike. You can pick all of the parts and look back with satisfaction at all the money you've spent.

Pft. Peanuts. My next bike is going to be a custom build. Even running a 105 groupset its going to come in close to £2.5k. And for those who say "that's worth more than my car!", I'm selling my car to finance it :D

Um - the first bit of customisation I did was to stick on Di2 - am I the winner already?

Anyhow - I guess if we started to talk about "customising" the rider, the bike parts might start looking cheap...

You are so right. I've just checked up on the upgrades to my Look 585 since I got it a little over two years ago.

    1 x Deda Dog Fang
1 x pair of Look Keo Blades only bought because they were too cheap not to.

errrrr, that's it! I'm not doing it right.....

And it was custom to start with....

If I can find low profile carbon clinchers that are a worth while amount lighter than the Neutrons I might dabble. The completely pointless potential upgrade would be Record if I can find a complete groupset cheap enough. It may happen but it would be a bit silly!

Wise move - I tallied up the mileage & spend for the last 14 months and found the 3000 miles has cost me £3,800 (£2.5K on bikes & £1.3K on kit/accessories/consumables). *shakes fist at Excel for revealing fiscal shocker*

    Horrendous amounts of spendage here.

And what's even worse is that I'm strongly tempted to buy a bit of Italian carbon road loveliness at the moment - and that will involve new kit as I can't be riding around in my baggies and SPD shoes of course..........
