I have recently bought a road bike (Specialized Allez) absolutely love it but i am a speed demon. however i went to my local bike shop (before i got my Allez) and rode a trek bike with two levers on the shifters (up, down) but on my specialized the shifters (2300) don't have this option. There is only one lever and to change up a gear i have to be on the hoods to reach a small flick switch on the sides of the shifters. Soooo... I was wondering whether you could combine tiagra shifters with 2300 groupset? Or do you have to replace other components?

Thanks ed

yep all cross compatible. Just check the shifters match the cassette (10 speed/9 speed etc).

If you need to change the speed of your current setup, you only REALLY need to change the cassette and chain (as well as shifters) and anything else can be changed over time.

Are the 2300 shifters 8 speed? If so then you can't just swap the shifters as Tiagra are 9 or 10 speed (older Tiagra is 9 speed, new Tiagra is 10 speed).
    More problems but still living....

I say the 2nd part as I think 2300 is 8 speed (seems to be the case after a quick google search) and tiagra is 9 (or 10 for 2012) so just bear that in mind.

I think you can get some cheap cassettes from the classifieds on here, but online is also very cheap compared to in store.

For the amount you save by going online, you could probably then also afford the chain whip and tools to replace it so no need to use bike shop!

(amaferanga got in just before me)

Again thanks but surely if I change the cassette then I have to change the rear dérailleur as well? Also has anyone seen a set of tiagra shifters for less than £150

Nah should be ok. The mech just 'does as its told', the shifters are the only intelligent part, i.e how much to move the mech each shift.
Perhaps you can change the mech at a later date. Although from 8->10 speed you may want to check the width of the jockey wheels on the mech against a 10sp chain (if the chains are THAT much narrower).

Tiagra shifters should be much less than 150. 105s are about 150

(plus a discount code or 2 should get you down).

If not, the classifieds always have good deals!

So 10-sp cassette fits on 9-sp hub? No freehub or axle length changes required?

Don't think so. I'm pretty certain 8/9/10 are all good for shimano on the same freehub.

All 7700 ultegra shifters work on 2300? I thought the 700 series shifters had different cable pull length?

Also is ultegra not a bit overkill? For what the op wants?

Hey Russy - just to confirm -
7700 is the 9 speed Dura Ace.

6700 is 10 speed Ultegra so will need a new cassette and chain, certainly. I am not sure how much narrower the 10sp chain is to 8sp, so I recommend he check the chain will run over the front chainrings and through the rear mech jockeywheels, as I suppose there is a chance (slim!) it will be too narrow. (in which case a whole new groupset is in order)

As for cable pull, 2300 is 8 speed only, so I would certainly get a new cassette and chain. I'm not sure where you would find 8 speed tiagra-style shifters. - EDIT WRONG LINK. Can't find any....

Not sure what the OP is after, but he said he wanted Tiagra (or equivalent, I presume) shifters for 150 quid, and it just so happened that someone listed some 10 speed shifters in the classifieds, so presumably the possibility of being haggled to 150.

BTW OP - all this maintenance is dead easy to do yourself!

Ok thanks for the advice but a friend has told me he is upgrading his groupset on his time trial bike (105, but mostly ultegra!) to dura ace and he might give me his old groupset!! (For Free) A huge step up from 2300. The crank on my bike is a double and so is the 105/ultegra but I will need to buy some 10 speed shifters. On chain reaction cycles they sell separate shifters (left/right) at £64 a shifter I would like to know if I can get away with only buying a right shifter because I am only changing the rear cassette's number of speeds?

Sorry I made that sound confusing but thank you if you (understand and) answer.

can you use 8 speed double shifters on a 10 speed chainset I think is your question.

I THINK you should be ok, but I am not 100% certain. I have a 9 speed ultegra LH shifter going cheap if you are interested. (so has the shifter behind the brake rather than a thumb shifter)
Sorry I can't be more help. I would ask your bikeshop or hope someone else replies!

Thank you for your offer but what I meant was will I only need to buy a 10 speed RH shifter?
