Silly question - XT Shifter

I'm no beginner, but I am a bit behind in the new tech. I've just got a canyon nerve am (great bike) and it has XT shifters. Am I right in saying that the top shifter works in both directions??? It certainly does something, and i kind of hit it by mistake today but noticed it did do something... Put me right please!

    Excellent. Though pushing it in the opposite direction to the other shifter resulted in a less smooth shift (I think, I will try again tomorrow!)

    Nope, it's exactly the same. The idea is you can activate it with either your finger or thumb.
