short crown? tall crown?

I'm currently very slowly building myself a downhill bike, I bought my mates old Scott Nitrous 10 frame and have been doing my research on parts for it.

As I have been looking around at forks I've noticed that they all seem to have short and tall crowns, having never owned any dual crown forks before I dont know the difference, I assume it is to fit different size headsets but I cant understand why that would require an entirely different crown? surely you would just slide the crown further up the steerer tube?

If anyone could advise me on this, or even better tell me which I would need for my build it would be much appreciated.

the differences are for short or tall headtubes.

there are only certain clamping points for the crowns and the top one can come in different shapes.

    read the makers fork manual.

is there any way of telling what year my frame is? it looks like scott made nitrous' from 2004-2007, or will it not really matter, im guessing the frame probably didnt change shape that much?

is there a way to work out the year of a frame? just noticed that they reccommend different travel lengths for different year frames.

Hopefully Boxxers but not 100% yet

I had to have a tall crown because my headtube is very long and the headset is fairly tall as the headtube isn't tapered, see here

Well that was really a loaded question as Boxxers are really the only fork that comes with the options.

And post up pictures of what you have and we will ID it.

Apologies for the delay, I've got a couple of quick snaps from my iPhone so not the best quality I'm afraid.

Let me know if there's any problems with links or anything.

Just to clarify, if anyone can date the frame then that would be brilliant and also any help on where I would measure to determine if it needs a short or tall crown.

    Cheers for your help

    Cheers Nick,

So you would recommend single crown forks? Would have liked to put more than 170mm of travel on the front really :/ any forks with that amount of travel that you would say are worth a look at off the top of your head?

Well it was a 130 to 170 front travel frame, the octane was the one that went up to 200mm but the first 888 were a tad to tall for it and I ended up with some white bros DH 2 on mine which had a much lower AC height.
But back to yours I would look at a travel adjustable single crown fork max 180mm purely so you can drop the travel to make it rideable when you are not heading down a hill and keep the steering on any trails.

Just looked at the Scott site and found the manual for it, they say a max of 180mm so your idea would work.

My plan was to use it for DH, still a plausible idea with single crown forks? Or is it gonna be more of an AM machine?

I assume when you say 'on yours' you mean you had an octane?

Well, you will be able to take a 180mm single crown bike down a DH track fine. It may not be stiff enough at the front end to be competitive at a high level, but it depends what you want to do with it.

Can anyone recommend any forks? Having not been biking long I'm not that clued up on different makes etc and am struggling to think of any 180mm forks tbh

Or recommend a good place to search for them?

    Cheers
